The Benefits of Real-Time Network Monitoring for Small Businesses
In today’s digital-driven economy, small businesses rely heavily on stable networks for everything from email communication and cloud services to online sales and customer interactions. Real-time network monitoring is an essential service to enable these activities. With real-time monitoring, your business network benefits from continuous oversight of your IT infrastructure via specialized software that tracks performance metrics, traffic patterns, and potential issues as they occur. Unlike traditional periodic checks, this proactive approach provides instant alerts and data insights, enabling swift action. For small businesses with limited IT resources, adopting real-time monitoring can be a game-changer, preventing costly disruptions and ensuring smooth operations.
Putting blown calls behind us
As we write, the MLB League Championship Series are in full swing, and fans are wondering which ballplayer’s heroics will make the difference for his team. Or maybe, the series will turn on an umpire’s bad call. That doesn’t happen often, but when it does, fans don’t forget. Perhaps the most notorious example came in Game 6 of the 1985World Series between the Kansas City Royals vs. St. Louis Cardinals. With St. Louis leading the series three games to two and ahead in the game 1-0 in the ninth, the Royals’ Jorge Orta hit a routine grounder. An out would have sealed the World Series for the Cardinals. But umpire Don Denkinger called Orta safe at first, even though the television replay showed he was out by a step. Kansas City rallied for a 2-1 win, forcing a Game 7, which they won 11-0.
Our hometown heroes have also been victims and beneficiaries of officials’ malpractice:
- 1969 — Game 4 of the Miracle Mets series against the Baltimore Orioles took an odd turn in the bottom of the 10th inning of a 1-1 tie. Reserve catcher J.C. Martin batted with runners on first and second and laid down a sacrifice bunt. The Baltimore pitcher fielded Martin’s bunt, but his throw to first base hit Martin in the back and careened into right field. Pinch runner Rod Gaspar was able to score from second base on the error, delivering the win for New York. Baltimore Oriole manager Earl Weaver argued strenuously that Martin had run inside the baseline and should have been out for interference with the throw, but to no avail.
- 1973 — In Game 2 of the World Series against the Oakland A’s, the Mets’ shortstop Bud Harrelson attempted to score from third base on a fly ball to the outfield. The home plate umpire ruled Harrelson out, despite a dramatic plea from a kneeling Willie Mays and manager Yogi Berra’s spirit argument. Harrelson was ejected from the game for arguing the call, famously replying, “You can’t throw me out for your incompetence!” Eventually, the Mets won that grueling game in 12 innings.
- 1996 — The Jeffrey Maier Incident took place in the bottom of the 8th inning of Game 1 of the ALCS with the New York Yankees trailing the Baltimore Orioles 4–3. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter hit a deep fly to right field only to have a 12-year-old fan, Jeffrey Maier, reach over the wall, catch the ball in the field of play, and pull it into the stands. Umpire Richie Garcia ruled it a home run instead of an out from fan interference. Replay showed that outfielder Tony Tarasco would likely have caught the ball. The homer tied the game 4–4, and enabled the Yankees to win 5–4 in extra innings.
- 1999 — In Game 4 of the ALCS at Fenway Park, the Yankees were leading 3-2 in the eighth and Red Sox’s Jose Offerman was on first base with one out. Batter John Valentin hit a check-swing grounder to Yankees’ second baseman Chuck Knoblauch, who attempted to tag Offerman advancing to second, then tossed the ball to first for the out. Umpire Tim Tschida called Offerman out for an inning-ending double play, despite video evidence showing that Knoblauch had missed the tag. Announcer Tim McCarver wondered whether Tschida had called Offerman for running out of the baseline, but said “He did not look like he was out of the baseline to me.” The call would become known as Knoblauch’s phantom tag, and the Yankees would win the ALCS 4-1 and advance to the World Series.
Fortunately, Major League Baseball has adopted video review for such controversial plays. Under the rules initiated in 2008, and expanded for some judgment calls in 2014, umpires can stop play and conduct a video review. Prior to video review, an aggrieved team could play the game “under protest,” but rarely was a remedy given. Video review enables umpires to get the right result while the game is still in progress. This is similar to the protection your business network gets from real-time monitoring.
Preventing downtown that can cripple your business
One of real-time monitoring’s primary benefits is preventing downtime. Network outages can cripple a small business, leading to lost revenue, frustrated customers, and damaged reputation. Real-time monitoring detects anomalies—such as unusual spikes in traffic, hardware failures, or connectivity drops—before they escalate into full-blown problems. For instance, tools can send immediate notifications via email or SMS, allowing owners or staff to address issues promptly. By identifying root causes like overloaded servers or malware intrusions in real time, businesses can maintain maximum uptime, minimizing financial impacts and maintaining customer trust. This preventive strategy is especially vital for e-commerce sites or service-based operations, where every minute offline translates to missed opportunities.
Beyond averting crises, real-time monitoring significantly improves network performance. It provides granular visibility into bandwidth usage, device efficiency, and application behavior, helping pinpoint bottlenecks that slow down operations. For example, if a small retail business notices sluggish point-of-sale systems during peak hours, monitoring data might reveal excessive data transfers from outdated software. Armed with this information, owners can optimize configurations, upgrade hardware, or redistribute resources for faster speeds and better efficiency. Over time, this leads to enhanced employee productivity, smoother workflows, and a competitive edge. Remote monitoring options further allow small teams to manage growing networks without on-site expertise, scaling as the business expands.
Peace of mind for small business owners
Perhaps the most intangible yet valuable benefit is the peace of mind that real-time monitoring offers business owners. Running a small enterprise often means wearing multiple hats, and constant worry about IT vulnerabilities can be exhausting. Real-time monitoring alleviates this by providing 24/7 vigilance, including security threat detection like unauthorized access or data breaches. Owners receive regular reports on network health, freeing them to focus on core activities like innovation, marketing, and customer service. Knowing that potential issues are flagged instantly reduces stress and empowers confident decision-making, fostering a more balanced work-life dynamic.
